Mundi Ventures backs FinMaq's $6.5M Series A to close the equipment financing gap for Colombia's small businesses

Mundi Ventures, through its Mundi Latam Fund, is proud to join FinMaq's $6.5 million Series A. The round is led by Accion, with continued support from existing investors ALIVE Ventures and 30N Ventures.

Led by co-founders Diego Sanz de Santamaría (CEO) and Diego Acero (CFO), FinMaq is a Colombian fintech that finances the machinery and equipment micro, small and medium businesses need to grow. It has served more than 1,600 clients and disbursed over $100 million. The new funding will help it double its operation, passing $200 million in disbursements and 5,000 clients within the next 18 months.

Here's why we're so excited about it.

Micro, small and medium businesses are the backbone of Colombia's economy. SMEs make up 99.5% of formal companies, generate 79% of jobs and contribute about 40% of GDP (OECD, 2026; BBVA Research, 2024). Yet credit rarely reaches the smallest of them: only 15.3% of microenterprises have access to credit, compared with 74.8% of medium-sized firms (OECD, 2026). An industrial oven, a dental chair or a backhoe can transform what a business earns, but without credit many owners wait years, turn to informal lenders, or never buy at all.

FinMaq fills that gap differently.

Instead of waiting for clients to walk into a bank, FinMaq meets them where they buy. It partners with equipment distributors to offer credit, rent-to-own, hybrid and post-sale financing at the point of sale. A proprietary scoring model built for credit-thin businesses gives pre-approval in minutes, and because distributors bring the clients, FinMaq grows without heavy marketing spend. Its clients range from health clinics and construction contractors to food producers, rural veterinarians, transport operators and smallholder farmers.

Then there is insurance.

For a small business, a financed machine is often its most valuable asset. If it breaks down or is stolen, both the loan and the livelihood are at risk. FinMaq is building insurance into its offer so that clients can protect the asset, and the income it generates, from day one. This is where we can help most. Insurance is our specialism, and we will work closely with the FinMaq team as they build out this side of the business.

But what makes this a Series A story is impact at scale.

FinMaq has grown with discipline, keeping its default rate below the industry average. Its clients are split evenly between urban and rural areas, and 40% are women. In an independent survey by 60 Decibels, 72% of clients said FinMaq gave them their first access to this kind of financing, 86% reported a better business outlook, 82% higher earnings and 70% a better quality of life. On average, every machine FinMaq finances creates one new formal job.

"We remain firmly committed to driving meaningful social impact through productive financial inclusion," says CEO Diego Sanz de Santamaría.

For Mundi Latam Fund, FinMaq has everything we look for: a real problem, a model that works, strong credit discipline and a clear role for insurance in its future. Its business and its impact grow together, because every new loan puts a productive asset in the hands of a business that banks have left behind.

"What struck us most is the team. Diego Sanz de Santamaría and Diego Acero bring together in depth experience in banking, capital markets and technology, and they have already built and scaled companies before. Above all, they are mission-driven: they know their clients, they understand their risks, and they are building FinMaq to change what small businesses in Colombia can achieve. We are proud to stand behind them and support expansion of their product in other Latam countries," says Rafaela Andrade, Partner at Mundi Latam Fund.

That is why Mundi Latam Fund was created: to back the companies bringing insurance and financial protection to the people and businesses across Latin America who need it most.

Productive assets change what small businesses can achieve. With FinMaq, more of Colombia's entrepreneurs can access them, and keep them protected, and we're delighted to be part of the journey.
